Divided and Unhappy ?

“Spoonfeed him and as an adult he will always need someone to lean on,” says Vatsyayan CEO of Connect: Counseling and Training solutions

Enter the Helicopter parent Parents these days want t o control every aspect of a child?s life ? from friendships and hobbies to job interviews ? stifling his ability to make decisions Veenu Sandhu / New Delhi Sep 08, 2012, 00:18 IST ........The extent of helicopter parenting may vary from mild to extreme but it often proves to be counterproductive, say counsellors and child psychologists. For example, when a class of eight-year-olds from Delhi went on a picnic, the parents of one child followed the bus in their car. They may have done this simply out of extreme concern for their child, given that newspapers are flooded with reports of accidents during school trips. To the child, however, this sends out a different message — that his parents perhaps do not trust him and this exposes him to the mockery of his peers. Some children, say psychologists, might also feel reassured that their parents are always there for them. Such messages take root and the child does not lear...

Life Enhancing Tips... The Counselor

10 Life-Enhancing Things You Can Do in Ten Minutes or Less By  Barton Goldsmith, Ph.D. Created  Apr 17 2010 - 9:48am It usually takes us much longer to change our moods than we’d like it to take. Here are ten things you can do in ten minutes or less that will have a positive emotional effect on you and those you love. 1.    Watch "The Last Lecture" by Randy Paus ch . See it online at  Oprah.com . This is a deeply moving segment that may be the best ten minutes you've ever invested in front of a computer. 2.    Spend a little while watching the sunset with your mate . Nothing extra is necessary. Just sit and take in the natural  beauty  of the sky and appreciate being able to share it with the one you love. 3.    Sit quietly by yourself. It doesn't really matter where or when . Just let your feelings bubble up and then experience the thoughts flowing out of your mind. Clearing your head and heart will giv...

Sour and suspicious

I have been married for five years. All this while, I was never really happy with my marriage although I do love my husband very much. We used to quarrel a lot because my husband cares for his own needs and happiness, and puts his friends as his main priority. He would tell me lies and neglect me just to be with them. I don’t think I could ever forget those lies because it involved a third party on two occasions. I know she was up to no good but my husband didn’t try to understand me and continued chatting with her every day on the net. He promised me he would never go beyond that. But after some arguments I found out he has called her on the phone to chat even though he says he treats her as a normal friend. I tried so hard all by myself to guard this marriage from troublesome third parties. Although it was in the past I still remember how he lied and how I relied on my own sixth sense to find out what was going on. Both girls pretended in front of me as if they didn’t k...

Learn to communicate better

"He who loves a quarrel loves sin; he who builds a high gate invites destruction." - Bible  "Always speak the truth, since the smallest of lies discredits your words of love or respect." - Dr. Emerson Eggerichs Dr. Emerson Eggerichs, family and marriage counselor, received the following email. "We were traveling in the car on our way to a movie. My husband was quiet and smiling smugly. I said, 'What are you thinking?' He replied, 'I was just thinking how critical you are.'  "My natural instinct was ... well, you know. But I thought, This is a goodwilled man. Maybe he means something else. So I asked, 'What does that mean, that I'm critical?' He replied, 'I mean our family couldn't exist without you. You are so critical to me.'" Communication skills, or their absence, will make or break a marriage.  David and Amy Olson, in their book "Empowering Couples: Building on Your Streng...

How do we define infidelity in the age of the Internet?

How do we define infidelity in the age of the Internet? In the not so distant past it was whispering couples hiding in dark smoky bars, lipstick stained collars and clandestine motel room romps that made up the concrete realities of relationship infidelity. But in today’s world of online confidential chat, private web browsing, instant messaging and endless porn, not to mention mobile ‘apps’ that locate available sex partners as readily as a decent Italian restaurant, simply defining what makes someone a cheater has have become a lot harder to pin down. http://blogs.psychcentral.com/sex/2011/07/infidelity-in-the-age-of-the-internet/

Suneel Vatsyayan suggests that children should be encouraged to make their own journeys. "Discuss the risks and be there with them as they get a taste

Celeb parents strike right note Uma Devarajan Raising children is a path full of trials and and elations. Into each parent’s life comes the instant when a passing remark from the "child" brings realisation that he or she is now an independent, self-reliant individual. The moment is usually a defining one. Just wishing for independent, responsible children is not enough, though. "Values have to be inculcated from day one. Don’t think that your child will learn when he grows up," says Delhi-based psychotherapist Suneel Vatsyayan. Monica Burman, wife of Dabur India chairman V.C. Burman, agrees. "Emotional support and tact in dealing with sensitive issues is very important. Make them feel that you are always there for them," she says. Coping with a child’s independence can be a bittersweet experience. It can at once be a source of immense pride and regret that the child is no longer within one’s protective circle. And knowing that your child is on the ...
