Ways to Help When a Parent is Being Abused

Knowing a loved one is being abused, whether it’s emotional, verbal, sexual, or physical, can be overwhelming. Anger, guilt, and feelings of helplessness are common, and though we want to help, we don’t always know how. Especially when the person being abused is a parent. When abuse is happening between people we love, it can be hard to know what to do, but there are steps you can take to navigate this unhealthy situation and provide support to those who need it most. 1. Talk with the Abused Parent It’s important to understand, people in unhealthy relationships usually have a low self-esteem. Abusers thrive on control, so their partners are made to feel powerless, often living in a state of constant fear and anxiety. The first time you bring up your concerns, your parent may not be ready to talk. Be sensitive and respectful of their boundaries. Begin by reaffirming your love in a private space, then gently express your concern. For example: “I love you, which is why it upsets me...

Creating a safe environment of acceptance of issues which are hard to talk about ,”Says Vatsyayan

Will stars outshine stigma? THE ASIAN AGE. | KAVI BHANDARI Published : May 22, 2018, 12:03 am IST ....It’s very easy to accept physical illness, whereas one tends to equate the mind to ones existence and sense of self . “Having something wrong with one’s mind leads to the feeling of losing oneself, which can be quite frightening . This in turn leads to suppression or denial of one’s state of mind. The only way to deal with this is to face it,” says Dr Mamta Shah, Clinical Psychologist. On the other hand, life coach Suneel Vatsyayan, feels it doesn’t have a large impact, “It is temporary. We welcome and respect their courage to talk about their mental health issues and it is good for them to talk once they have gained strength. People put celebrities on high pedestal and there is a disconnect. Celebrities have star power and good intentions, but it needs sustained efforts like Deepika Padukone’s foundation about mental health. More and people need to come forward from differe...

Is social media making you lonely?

After nine years of being a heavy Facebook user, Kishore Dhiman suddenly deactivated his account. The 32-year-old Delhi resident says that the long hours spent on the social networking site were beginning to take a toll on his mental health. The absence of human touch on Facebook was slowly gnawing at his state of mind. Though he had many "friends" on the medium and got plenty of "likes" and comments on his posts and pictures, he did not feel any real connection with these people. He was miserable. At 15, Samrat Kohli would spend nearly his entire day on social networking sites, to the extent that he had started retreating from real-life friendships. He had also become unusually violent. The psychologist who counselled him says the boy was exhibiting symptoms of social media related depression. Though social media platforms, like Facebook, have made the world more connected, they have also led to some worrying trends. Loneliness and depression are among thos...

A ban on alcohol needs public participation and campaigning..says Suneel Vatsyayan

Suneel Vatsyayan,  chairman of  Nada India Foundation , which works for betterment of the alcohol and drug addicted, told IANS: "A ban on alcohol needs public participation and campaigning. It must not just be a one man's decision or a political agenda."... Bihar  on Thursday joined the states that have banned liquor, with newly elected  Chief Minister  Nitish Kumar prohibiting sale and consumption of alcohol from April 1, 2016. But experts feel the decision should be "participatory" and not a "political agenda". Gujarat, Nagaland, Manipur (in some parts), and Union Territory of Lakshadweep have banned liquor while Kerala has since August 2014 been implementing the ban in a phased manner. In Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who had promised to ban liquor before state assembly elections, made the announcement at an official function to mark Prohibition Day in the state capital. He said the poorest of the poor had been consuming liquor, badly...

Children of Alcoholics...???

What Happens to Children of Alcoholics You can imagine what happens when you think about what it’s like to be on the receiving end of a parent’s drinking behaviors and you don’t understand the reason for those behaviors (i.e., the alcohol changing how the brain works). In her article, ” Adult Children of Alcoholics, ACoAs: Qualities and Traits ,” Dr. Tian Dayton, Clinical Psychologist and Author, shares the toll alcoholism takes on children as they try to stay out of harm’s way, avoid “triggering” their parent’s verbal or physical wrath, feel embarrassed to bring friends over, become anxious about their parent’s unpredictable behavior, or always feeling the need to take care of their parent instead of their parent taking care of them. The toll can include: Problem with self-regulation Hyper vigilance/anxiety Emotional constriction Loss of trust and faith Unresolved grief Traumatic bonding Learned helplessness Somatic disturbances Tendency to isolate High risk behav...

Breaking the Cycle of Codependency

Breaking the Cycle of Codependency If you have a pattern of making your relationships more important to you than you are to yourself, you may be codependent. When you are codependent, you tend to always put yourself last, constantly seek approval from others, and try to manipulate situations to your benefit. Because the cycle of codependency often repeats itself, you can find it challenging to break the cycle without professional codependency treatment. However, even without codependency treatment, there are some things you can do to end your  codependent behaviors  and learn to put yourself and your needs first. Ways to Overcome Codependency While  treatment for codependency  is often needed, especially if you are struggling with a drug or alcohol addiction, you can start working on breaking the cycle in the following ways: Get in tune with your needs:  Though there are times when selflessness is warranted, completely ignoring your needs in order t...

Sour and suspicious

I have been married for five years. All this while, I was never really happy with my marriage although I do love my husband very much. We used to quarrel a lot because my husband cares for his own needs and happiness, and puts his friends as his main priority. He would tell me lies and neglect me just to be with them. I don’t think I could ever forget those lies because it involved a third party on two occasions. I know she was up to no good but my husband didn’t try to understand me and continued chatting with her every day on the net. He promised me he would never go beyond that. But after some arguments I found out he has called her on the phone to chat even though he says he treats her as a normal friend. I tried so hard all by myself to guard this marriage from troublesome third parties. Although it was in the past I still remember how he lied and how I relied on my own sixth sense to find out what was going on. Both girls pretended in front of me as if they didn’t k...

Learn to communicate better

"He who loves a quarrel loves sin; he who builds a high gate invites destruction." - Bible  "Always speak the truth, since the smallest of lies discredits your words of love or respect." - Dr. Emerson Eggerichs Dr. Emerson Eggerichs, family and marriage counselor, received the following email. "We were traveling in the car on our way to a movie. My husband was quiet and smiling smugly. I said, 'What are you thinking?' He replied, 'I was just thinking how critical you are.'  "My natural instinct was ... well, you know. But I thought, This is a goodwilled man. Maybe he means something else. So I asked, 'What does that mean, that I'm critical?' He replied, 'I mean our family couldn't exist without you. You are so critical to me.'" Communication skills, or their absence, will make or break a marriage.  David and Amy Olson, in their book "Empowering Couples: Building on Your Streng...
